Wherever a roof meets something else, such as a chimney, a wall, a dormer or another roof slope, there has to be a way of stopping water getting into the joint. Lead has done that job for centuries because it can be shaped to fit and lasts for decades when it is fitted properly.
Lead fails when it is laid in pieces that are too long, fixed so it cannot move, or replaced with a smear of sealant. We use the right thickness for each detail, cut it to lengths that can expand and contract without splitting, and dress and lap it so water runs over each joint rather than into it. Chimney flashings are stepped and wedged into the brickwork, and soakers are built in with the tiles or slates.
